The abandoned cement works is one of the most impressive ruins I have seen in New Zealand. The sheer size of it is massive, exploring the ruins and staring up at the chimney really gets you wondering what this place would have been like in the 1880s… It’s now a grade 1 historic place which is free and open to the public (some of the more dangerous parts are fenced off due to falling rubble). The whole place is like some kind of industrial Rome except it is local to Warkworth. It could either be beautiful, or creepy – if you believe the stories about it being haunted. Shelter under the ruins on a hot day, or cool off in the fresh water swimming hole and do bombs from the bank because the quarry is so deep!
